Building the Christmas Tree Railroad - Part I
For over fifteen years we have had a Large Scale Train running around our Christmas tree. I would say that for the first two years we had kind of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree and the holiday was a great excuse to take over the living room with miles of track.

Building a Skimmer for your Pond
A couple of years ago I thought I would like to have a skimmer for the ponds. I wanted to try to make one that would go inside the pond and not dig a hole next to the pond. I tried several ideas, the one that worked best was a square trashcan with the pump inside and filter media built into a rack.

Animating Your Layout Part #3
Animation on your garden railroad can take many forms. Most of us equate animation with movement but bringing things to life is not limited to movement alone. One of the most interesting and attention getting animations that we have installed at the new Phipps Conservatory garden railroad has no moving parts at all!

Animating Your Layout Part #1
Nothing brings more life to a model railroad layout than bits of animation scattered here and there throughout the landscape.  Visitors may not notice the movement at first  but will be drawn back to make sure their eyes aren't playing tricks on them!   "Did that door just open?"  "I could swear that I just saw one of those  prairie dogs pop out of his hole!&
