Gauge & Scale
0m: The Other Garden Gauge Railroad
I planned to run an 0m train in the background, with the same trains running in the foreground in G scale, but my plans changed. I decided to sell my collection of 0m trains, but want to describe them while I still have them in hand to photograph.

One Gauge, Many Scales, Much Confusion
It may take some time, but eventually, most everyone who gets into Model Railroading in G-gauge, which has been expressed as #1 Gauge, Garden Gauge, G-Scale, F-Scale and Large Scale along with a few other colorful nicknames, begins to finally understand the Scale and Gauge thing.

Introducing Dual Gauge in G
Where short-line narrow gauge railroads met mainline standard gauge railroads, there were often merging tracks in two gauges. Instead of having two separate yards for each gauge, railroads merged the gauges together so both gauges could operate on the same track.

NMRA Standards: A Reply to a Response
I want Large Scale to have the best set of standards possible. It appears that Mr. Ames shares that goal. Where we differ is in the process of achieving that goal.

NMRA - A Response to Standards
The standards created to date represent only a beginning and not an end of the process. We need to work together as a community to work towards unifying the hobby. A lot more work still needs to be done.

Large Scale Standards Not Done Right -- A Reaction to the NMRA's 2003 Proposal
Recently there has been quite a lot of talk about what we wish for in 2004. My wish is not for new products, though I am sure our manufacturers are planning exciting ones. Instead, my wish is that we large scalers will take up standards for Large Scale in earnest.

Scale Trucks 1:28 vs 1:32 - Scale Matters
So is there a difference between 1:28 and 1:32 scale? You bet!

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 6
Understanding the 1997 NMRA proposed standards will help us understand the history of Large Scale and help us to understand the new 2003 standards they have proposed.

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 5
As is fairly obvious by now, we large scalers tend to put far less emphasis on scale than do scale modelers (for whom scale is perhaps the most important factor in defining their approach to the hobby).

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 4
The story of the revival of interest in the larger scales is tied together with the story of the various scales. This review will examine thirteen scales in roughly the chronological order they became associated with Large Scale.

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 3
Understanding the role gauge has played is essential for understanding Large Scale, and no discussion of the scales will make any sense without first discussing how we large scalers use gauge.

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 2
We tend to think of Large Scale as a fairly recent phenomenon in the hobby -- a phenomenon, which started in 1968 with LGB and which, in the U.S., only came into wider notice in the 1970s. But many of the larger scales and the activities associated with Large Scale have much longer histories.

The LSOL Gauge and Scale Report - Part 1
Whenever gauge and scale in Large Scale are discussed, it seems that the discussion reflects negatively on Large Scale. There is often a litany of complaints -- too many scales, too close together in size...
