Being the father of a seven year old boy, I am always venturing into the toy departments of stores. Whenever I am perusing the isles with Joey I always keep an eye out for items I can use on my garden railway.

One item I chanced upon a few weeks ago was an "animal assortment" at the local "Big Lots" which contained 12 dogs of various breeds.

At only $1.99 I figured I couldn't go wrong and they looked about right. At less than $.17 each these little dogs are a real value. The packaging says these items are made by "Toy Major" and distributed Midwestern Home Products, Inc. P. O. Box 0591 Wilmington, DE 19899. They are item #609610.

Each dog is a different breed, and I did not take the time to try and determine the breed of each one or if each one is in exact scale for its particular breed. But when I placed them next to a Presier and Bachmann figure I thought they looked pretty good, and in scale (good enough for me anyway).

Check out your local Big Lots and pick up a set of these inexpensive canines to chase away the chipmunks and squirrels on your layout. Go to www.biglots.com and check their store locator for the closest location to you.
