Not All Semi's Are Created Equal

Did you know that not just any semi-trailer can be used as a Road Railer? I didn't until I watched this video about this fascinating technology.

Overview
Wabash International manufactures them, AMTRAK has 660 of them and Swift Trucking has enough to run exclusive trains. What are they? Road Railers.

But they are not just your average trailer that gets loaded on a train. See what make them different. If you run them on your railroad, learn some prototypical information.

Trailers
Now I understand. I couldn't figure out how a "standard" truck trailer could handle the stress of being a rail-car. Thanks for providing us with this information Peter.

U.P. slipped in at the end
Leave it to the Union Pacific to pop up at the end of the video. I lined N&W RoadRailer traims out of Luther yard in St.Louis back in the mid 1970's. They were the first trains that I dealt with that had F.R.E.D.(flashing rear end divices) instead of a caboose, and we had to provide an Absolute Block to the rear of the train against following movements.

Roadrailers
Finally I have seen a video that shows how the trailers are mounted on the bogies. I have wondered how it was done. I will save this video for my boy scout railroad merit badge class next year.
