Getting in-between two train units to couple and uncouple them isn't my idea of the safest job in the world.
And it looks like hard work too.

Overview
How do they go together? Vehicles have buffers, one at each corner on the ends, which are pulled together and compressed by the coupling device. This arrangement limits the slack in trains and lessens shocks.
It does require the worker to go between the two cars to couple the units together. I can't imagine doing this on one of UP's 100 plus car units.
