What do you think happened?
Jun 21, 2013

Here is a Milwaukee Road Boxcar. What caused the deformation?

Put on your thinking caps; Or check Wikipedia; Or just guess. The answer I have is probable but unconfirmed. Let us know the truth.

MILW "expanded" boxcar
This MILW boxcar was carrying rolls. It was set off on a siding where the heat built up in the car. The dough expanded, pushing up the roof and blowing off the doors!

expansion of roof
I say if it ws carrying rolls - the Pillsbury Dough Boy got into the car and just let loose ....He probably burped and set off a chain reaction.

Boom
Its obviously an over pressure event. Some boxcars were used to haul grain, before covered hoppers came into wide use. Grain dust can be explosive. So my guess is that the car was hauling grain, and the grain dust exploded.

Ka Booom
I agree with David M.

Milw boom
I think David is correct. I owned a feed mill for 40 years and before hoppers we got in many grain cars that looked like this one.

Boxcar Derormation
Hobo who had an excessive diet of beans!!??
Tom Knight - 06/21/2013 - 17:41

agree
I like Tom's theory, but David's is probably the right answer.
Ron Selliers - 06/21/2013 - 21:36

Answer
Peter, so are you going to tell us what the correct answer is?
David A. Maynard - 06/26/2013 - 15:52

Answer?
My information from 2 different people was that the boxcar had Pillsbury Popp'in Fresh inside. It was set out on a siding in error.

I was told that it was used in a Pillsbury ad but I haven't found it yet.

Boxcar
Well, rats, my enigma machine is out for repair but did find it is 1976 John Hill photo in the Pig's Eye Train Yard, St Paul MN.

One person comments: Looks like that last load of popcorn got a little too warm.
