Jim Matchett was introduced to large scale model railroading in 1995 after a lifetime of enjoying trains and model railroads but with no active layout. While visiting the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati to see their holiday displays he noticed strange little trains running through the gardens.

After further inquiry he found a brochure for the Greater Cincinnati Garden Railroad Society (GCGRS) and learned that the trains, called LGB, had been erected by Paul Busse and GCGRS. Jim and his wife Jane joined the club shortly thereafter and purchased their first LGB starter set shortly after that.

In 1999 after retiring from a 40-year career as a mechanical engineer Jim and Jane moved to a new home picked partly for its suitability for garden railroading. With a lot of assistance from Paul Busse and club members the J&J Railroad was born. Jim maintains the track and rolling stock while Jane is in charge of buildings and grounds.

Jim and Jane continue to actively participate in club activities including conventions, modules and layout open houses. Jim currently serves on the GCGRS board of directors.
