Author  Bio
Featured Author: Dave finds garden railroading to be an ideal outlet for his other hobbies and interests.

Dave recently retired from public education after 35 years in the classroom and as technology coordinator in suburban Pittsburgh.

In 2002 he and his wife, Lois, purchased a 1920's vintage bungalow that had a yard that was ideal for a garden railway and pond. Dave finds garden railroading to be an ideal outlet for his other hobbies and interests that include woodworking, computer programming, microprocessor control & robotics, photography and electronics.

So far the D & L Railway hosts a 190 foot main line, two scratch built bridges, over 100 trestle bents (the back yard was ideal, but not flat!) and a number of kitbashed and scratch built buildings.

Dave is also a ham radio operator (N3ENM), an avid cyclist (6000+ miles each year for the last 12 years) and hiker.

    Mars Light for ATSF PA
I recently installed a Mars light (7 3mm-led aray)made by Dave, and replaced the the lower light with a 3 mm led (1,500 ohm resister in series)with both hooked up to track power through a small bridge rectifier. Wow!!! What a difference and the best Mars light on the market. Dave's original article was run by LSOL on August 9, 2006, and I just completed the installation in January 2008. It was well worth the wait.

    Book?
    Dave,

I read everything you put on LSOL with great interest.

I'd love to get into what you are doing, and am wondering if you have it in book form; especially with your work with Pikaxe and other electronics. I'm a novice with anything beyone a transistor or two, but would love to put some of your work on my railroad. Thanks for the great articles.

    Mine Explosion
    Dave:

I know you wrote an article on creating the mine explosion, but I can't locate it on LSOL. Please point me in the right direction to locate it.

Caboose LED Lighting - how to proceed
David, I have printed and read all your articles. I would like to convert my USA Cabooses to LED's but am unsure how to proceed. Currently these cars have incandescent lamps with a 9 volt battery which soon dies while running locos under battery power. Can you offer suggestions on how to proceed? Your help would be most appreciated.

    Book
Dean - I have not put together the info on book form but you can find most of what I have written here at LSOL (just search for Bodnar). There are some other things on-line at my web page: Trainelectronics.com

There is also a PICAXE book that you might want to get - just go to AMAZON.com and search for PICAXE - there is only one!

    Good luck!

    MP3 Sound Article
Norman - the MP3 unit is not meant to be exposed to the elements - if you wanted to leave it outside I would place it inside of a Tupperware container. Make a few holes for the power, control & audio cables & seal them with silicon sealant. Check it from time-to-time to make sure nothing is getting inside - it would be wise to put in a few of those silica gel packets you get with some devices to absorb any moisture that gets by.

Ken - just search the articles (there is a link at the top of this page) for animating and you will find it - it is #3 in that series - you can also search for Bodnar.
