Jul 28, 2011

By Tom Knight

A spreading grass-like plant which makes an excellent carefree groundcover BUT can become invasive.

Plant Common NameCreeping Liriope, Creeping Lilyturf
Plant SpeciesLiriope spicata
Plant TypeHerbaceous - Perennial
Plant Height & SpreadNormal Size
Height:   10 to 12 inches
Spread:  Infinity (VERY INVASIVE)

Controlled Size
Height:   N/A
Spread:  N/A

Plant Positive PointsExcellent groundcover which can choke out weeds BUT will also choke out desirable herbaceous plants as well.
Plant Negative Points

Can become a "weed". Will grow through ballast, between ties, through cracks in the walk, etc.

Liriope mascara is better choice for garden train layouts.

Plant Sun/ShadeFull sun to full shade
Plant USDA Hardiness Zonezone4, zone5, zone6, zone7, zone8
Plant USDA Hardiness Text4 thru 10
Plant Use on RailroadGroundcover AWAY FROM TRACK AREAS!
Plant Misc NotesA spreading grass-like plant which makes an excellent carefree groundcover BUT can become invasive.  Will spread by underground stems and form a thick mat of foliage where ever it grows.

Liriope
Can this be contained by growing in a pot buried in the ground?

How does it tolerate high heat in the shade? In the sun? Does it take a lot of water (more than a lawn)? We're on meters now.
