They are Bird Feeders, not Bird Houses

These are cool buildings that can be made to work on your railroad. Not bird houses, they are bird feeders.

The other day we were at our local Ace Hardware store. Yep, if we are not at the Post Falls WalMart we must be over at the Post Falls Ace Hardware.

Sandy, the owner, just did a big addition to the store, and it looks great. Only problem is that everything is someplace else in the store now. After going to the store for 15 years we knew where everything was. Not anymore.

We figured we should walk up and down each aisle and make a mental note as to where things were now. That turned out to be a good idea as we found some great plastic bird feeders. These are feeders and not bird houses.

These units are a great addition for some houses on your Garden Railroad. The best part is that they cost between $15 and $25 dollars each.

I spoke with the people at Ace Hardware and found out that they are a Garden Train friendly business. They are interested in us Garden Trainers and helped us out by offering some extra bird feeders for us to give away.

The bird feeder units are very well built. The plastic is thick and the details are very nice. The size is right too. The units come with a three year warranty, and are designed to be outside. The plastic is UV impregnated, so like our track ties, will survive fine. They have all the right specifications for being outside in your railroad.

I spoke with Peter, the president of the company that makes the bird feeder units. He said that they have been on the market for about three years and are very popular among the bird watching community.

He told me that he was aware of Garden Trains and had gotten a few calls telling him that people have been using them in their railroads with great success.

There are two types. There is an 8 pound unit and a 5 pound unit. The larger units are longer. So a bird feeder that is designed to hold 8 pounds is longer and has two windows. The church that holds only 5 pounds is shorter and is only one window long.

The units come completely apart. There is no glue on the unit anywhere. All the pieces are held togther with pressure.

This is perfect for those of us that are going to paint and weather these units. Watch for some future articles on how to do this.

So run, don't walk to your Ace Hardware store, and pick up at least one.
